Kyler Murray congratulates Nationals’ first-round pick, fellow OU star Cade Cavalli

Even though he didn’t make the full-time move to pitcher until his junior season of college, Cade Cavalli’s talent on the mound was enticing enough for the defending World Series champion Nationals to make him the 22nd overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft Wednesday night.

Cavalli spent three seasons at Oklahoma and spent his freshman and sophomore year as a two-way player. Not everyone can make a move to pitcher full-time and get drafted in the first round, and one of his former teammates made sure to congratulate him after the Nats made their selection.

“I just want to tell you how much I’m proud of you, and I know you’re family’s proud of you,” Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray said. “All the hard work, all the hours, all the dedication, the reps, all of it’s for right here, man. You deserve it, but this is just the beginning.”

Cavalli played with Murray in 2018 when each of them were occupying different positions. It just so happened that when Murray wasn’t on the diamond, he was leading the most electrifying offense in college football en route to a Heisman trophy.

Murray was taken with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft after he was taken ninth overall by the Athletics in the 2018 MLB Draft. Ultimately, Murray chose football and won Offensive Rookie of the Year with Arizona.

Oklahoma seems to pump out athletes rather than specialized players to the major leagues, and that can only be a good thing for Cavalli and the Nats.
